Rosacea, Flushing and Inflammation. What to bye over the counter

Rosacea, Flushing and Inflammation. What to bye over the counter
03 May 2016 — 14:46

Rosacea is a disease shown in flashes, redness and pimples which time to time can cover areas of broken capillaries.

There are 2 major components of rosacea: redness and inflammation.

For facial reddness:

The topical gel brimonidine 0.33% (Mirvaso) brings impressive improvement in the facial redness component of rosacea, but it does not suppress the inflammatory lesions of the disease, Dr. Joseph F. Fowler, Jr., said at the Hawaii Dermatology Seminar provided by the Global Academy for Medical Education/Skin Disease Education Foundation.

According to  clinical research, flushing occurs 12-24 hours after application of brimonidine, and usually lasts a day or two. It means that aggravation of rosacea is possible at the beginning of using such a topical therapy.

Because brimonidine gel  has quelled the erythema, the inflammatory lesions will stand out even more prominently.

“You’ve got to do something about the inflammatory component.” — noted Dr. Fowler, the conference co-director and a dermatologist at the University of Louisville. Medvspa offers unique combination of technologies as anti-inflammatory  part in the plan of Rosacea treatment.

Topical medications that address the inflammatory component of rosacea includeivermectin 1% cream (Soolantra), shown to reduce counts of bumps and azelaic acid 15% foam (Finacea), which also achieved an impressive reduction in inflammatory lesion.

Some rosacea patients are so intolerant of topical because of the skin hypersensitivity,  that they prefer oral therapy. For those patients, doxycycline is an option.

In addition to its anti-inflammatory effects, topical ivermectin kills Demodex. While rosacea is an inflammatory disorder, not an infection, drugs like ivermectin and crotamiton 10% cream (Eurax) that kill Demodex also improve rosacea.

Irritation is a problem with the azelaic acid 15% gel, whereas new azelaic acid 15% foam the problem of skin irritation appears very rearely.

If rosacea coexists with seborrheic dermatitis, Pimecrolimus cream (Elidel) gives good results.
